The (Road) Race is On
The East Haven Fall Festival 5K Road Race Committee, in conjunction with Mayor Joseph A. Carfora, announced today that the fifth Annual East Haven Community Classic Road Race will take place Saturday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m., with all proceeds pledged to benefit the Town's "Police Athletic League.”
Mayor Carfora explained, "The Town’s road race is held each year on the Saturday coinciding with the Fall Festival in cooperation with the Fall Festival Committee and our community’s Police Athletic League. It’s a fantastic event, steeped with tradition going back to the Festival’s early days, and it brings hundreds of people to our Town Green to kick off the second day of our annual Fall Festival.”
The race committee maintains a website at ehroadrace.com where interested participants can learn about the race, sign up, and pay the race entry fee. Mail-in registration forms can be requested by e-mailing ehcommunityclassic@gmail.com or by calling Judy Sittnick at 203-996-6596.
Carfora continued, "Judy Sittnick, the race's coordinator for over 20 years, will be working with members from our police department and State Representative Joe Zullo to organize this year's race. As with prior years, all of the profits from the race will go directly to benefit the Town's Police Athletic League, which provides quality, wholesome athletic programming and activities for Town youths."
Sittnick added, "In addition to our 5K road race, our race day activities will include an Almost a Mile Fun Run, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Town Green and end shortly before the 5K road race kicks off at 9 a.m."
Sittnick noted, "For the fifth year in a row, The Law Offices of Zullo, Zullo, and Jacks, LLC, has agreed to be the event’s main sponsor. This year, local realtor Tom Vanacore and the East Haven Memorial Funeral Home have joined Attorney Zullo as major sponsors, which will significantly help us improve the quality of our event and turn over additional monies to the Police Athletic League.”
The 5K road race route is fast and flat, begins at the Town Green, leads runners through the center of Town, and finishes on Main Street at the starting line next to the Town Green. The race is open to people of all ages and wheelchair athletes are encouraged and welcomed to participate. The event has ample water stations and includes a hydration station at the conclusion so that runners can recover after the race. Trophies are awarded across ten age categories, to both male and female participants, and to the male and female first place finishers.
Carfora concluded, "I am excited that we have a committed group of local volunteers and community stakeholders both organizing the race and competing in it. I encourage anyone interested in running to sign up for the race and show their support for the East Haven Police Athletic League."
