Beginning March 1 was the opening of "Catch and Release" trout season. By giving recently stocked trout a grace period until the second Saturday in April for them to acclimate to their new surroundings without being harvested, survival rate will be increased. Public opinion was broadly supportive of that change prior to it being implemented. That, in turn, translates into the majority of anglers willingly abiding by that decision.

Catch and release trout season continued surging, putting wind and rain aside. Anglers were out in numbers, catching impressive rainbows, browns, tigers, and some brookies. Air and water temperatures are rising. Most safe ice is gone, opening up many lakes and ponds to bass, pickerel, pike, walleye, and panfish action. Fishers are looking for early striper activity anticipating the coming of herring, while some are already testing the shoreline. Through previous studies conducted in conjunction with Woods Hole Laboratory, the oldest and original laboratory of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) established in 1871, we already know that black sea bass are sensitive to the construction of offshore wind farm development - specifically to the vibrations of drilling and spatial orientation.

Two of nature's species that Americans watch with great interest, curiosity, and affinity are our national bird, the bald eagle (fish hawk) that, in 1782, Congress approved a seal with an eagle in the center, and whales - mostly humpbacks, fin, and minke. However, it is the North Atlantic right whale that is a critically endangered marine mammal listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) since 1970. However, the bald eagle population has rebounded and has been removed from the ESA in 2007.

Is it too soon to be thinking of the warm season ahead? Many do not think so - especially those returning from the tropical islands, where they have already had a taste of tuna, wahoo, permit, bones, snook, snapper, and a slew of reef fish.
