Westbrook Heads to the Polls on Nov. 7
With Election Day just around the corner on Tuesday, Nov. 7, Westbrook voters are gearing up to make their voices heard by heading to the polls. This year, only one race is up for grabs.
The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Teresa Mulvey Municipal Center, 866 Boston Post Road, Westbrook. Absentee ballot applications and ballots can be obtained from the Town Clerk’s Office by calling 860-399-3044.
In an unusual move, only the race for the Zoning Commission will be a contested race on the ballot due to the Democratic Town Committee (DTC) only running six total candidates. The other races do not have contested seats.
Republicans Dwayne Xenelis and Linda Nolf, as well as Democrat Ryan Engels, are running for the Zoning Commission. Two of the three will be seated. Xenelis and Nolf are incumbents, while Engles is a freshman at UConn.
Vince Gentile, the chairman of the DTC, said the committee was intent on having people who would commit to attending the meetings of the various boards and commissions on the ballot.
“We collectively decided we didn’t have an opportunity to run a full competitive campaign this year,” he said. “It’s a big commitment campaigning and reaching out to people and dedicating your time to the meetings.”
Gentile said the DTC is always looking for quality candidates and encouraged any Democrat who may be interested in serving the town in any capacity to reach out.
The Ballot
At the top of the ballot, the entire Board of Selectmen will be reelected since all three members are running unopposed. John Hall is running unopposed for a second term as first selectman, while Republican incumbent Joseph Campbell and Democratic incumbent Chet Bialicki are running unopposed as selectmen.
Jane Spanilo Butterworth was nominated to be town treasurer.
Kimberly Bratz was nominated to be tax collector.
Republicans Kim Walker and Elizabeth Fernandes, as well as Democrat Haifa Jalil, are running for the Board of Education. All three will be seated.
Republican Tony Cozza and Democrat George Pytlik Jr. are running for the Board of Finance. Both will be seated.
Michelle Neri was nominated for the Board of Assessment Appeals.
Republican Janice Panella and Democrat Bill Neale are running for the Planning Commission. Both will be seated.
Republican Devin Xenelis and Democrat John Bech are running for the Zoning Board of Appeals. Both will be seated.
Republicans Amy Heilmann, Lynda Tragakes, and Heather Cassidy were nominated for the Library Board for a term of six years, while Republican Nilani Shankar was nominated for a term of two years.
