04/09/2023 06:26 AMIn a press release on April 4, First Selectman Carl Fortuna and Selectman Scott Giegerich announced they would seek reelection in the 2023 municipal elections.
Fortuna was first elected First Selectman in 2011 and will run for a seventh term. Giegerich has been a selectman since 2009. In the previous two election cycles—2019 and 2021—both Fortuna and Giegerich ran unopposed in their reelection campaigns.
In the press release, the duo touted their success with managing the fiscal well-being of the town, as well as investment in capital projects. According to the release, over the last 12 years, the pair have successfully refinanced the town’s debt, grown the rainy day fund, and reworked an employee pension plan to save money. The release also credited the duo with finding significant grant money over the last decade that has been used to fund items like sidewalks, roads, and parks.
“We are proud of our achievements, but there is always more to do, and operating our government in an efficient and transparent manner will continue to lead to Old Saybrook’s success,” Fortuna said in the release.
“I have never been more proud to live and serve in a community,” Giegerich said. “Old Saybrook is a gem, and serving on the Board of Selectmen has given me a chance to be a difference maker, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish next as a community.”
In addition to Fortuna and Giegerich, Treasurer Barbara Labriola will also seek reelection, according to the release. Labriola was elected to her position in 2021.
“Old Saybrook is a wonderful town to live and work in. We can all feel confident in our steady and stable financial plan. I look forward to continuing to work together with our leadership team,” Labriola said in the release.
