Saybrook Chamber Offers a Day of Golf for Good Cause

Eager to support local businesses and get in a round of golf with friends at the same time? The Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce is hosting a golf tournament at Fox Hopyard on July 18. Reservations are still available.

The tournament costs $175 per person and will take place at Fox Hopyard. Golf begins at 12:30 p.m.; lunch will be served prior to the tournament start. A buffet dinner will be served after the round.

In addition to the tournament there will be prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive as well as a raffle and a beverage cart.

Chamber Executive Director Judy Sullivan said that the tournament is open to everyone and those of all abilities. Sullivan said that there are still spots available for those interested.

“You can register as a foursome, or even a single or a twosome and we’ll pair you up,” said Sullivan.

The money raised by the tournament supports the work of the chamber, Sullivan explained. That work includes items like scholarships, networking evens, and other monthly events.

“It goes to supporting the chamber, generally,” said Sullivan.

The tournament will be a scramble, which means that each member of a team hits their tee shot then th team selects the best of those shots. Players then all hit their second shot from that location and then again choose who had the best shot and play from there. That procedure is used for all shots—including putts—for all 18 holes.

Sullivan said that 2022 marks the ninth time the tournament has been held.

“We did lose 2020, but we were able to hold it last year,” said Sullivan.

Sullivan said that the idea for the tournament started as an idea from chamber members who were eager to get out on the links for a good cause.

“We have quite a few members who were asking about golf and we have some avid golfers who wanted to help start it,” Sullivan recalled.

Sullivan said that the first few years the tournament was held by the casinos but for the last few years it has been held at Fox Hopyard.

“They actually went private this year, so we feel very fortunate we can still play it,” said Sullivan.

Sullivan said that registrations will remain open until July 14.

“It’s a really fun day and a really good team building exercise. I like to go out and golf myself. It’s a fun time and people enjoy the day for sure,” said Sullivan.
