Carney Receives Unanimous Republican Endorsement for Re-Election

Republican delegates representing the towns of Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook unanimously endorsed 23rd District State Representative Devin Carney for a fifth term.

Carney was unopposed for the nomination. The May 17 convention, held at Old Lyme Town Hall, bestowed the Republican Party’s official endorsement for another two-year term.

Accepting his party’s nomination, Carney stated, “Representing the 23rd District—the place where my family lives, where I was raised, where I went to school, where I work and volunteer—has truly been the honor of a lifetime,” said Carney. “We’ve faced so many challenges together—with more ahead—and I am asking the voters of the district for another term to continue representing them with independence, diligence, and transparency. I have always put people above politics, and we need that mentality now more than ever.”

Old Saybrook Treasurer Barbara Labriola nominated Carney.

“Devin is not your typical politician; he’s a true public servant. He really cares about the district he serves and always puts his constituents above special interests and partisan politics,” said Labriola. “We need his voice in Hartford to push back against high taxes, business-killing regulations, and outrageous spending that we see all too often. We desperately need balance and fiscal restraint in state government and that’s why we must re-elect Devin Carney.”

Longtime Old Lyme resident Deb Czarnecki seconded Carney’s nomination.

“Aside from his leadership in Hartford, Devin has kept a focus on all aspects of the 23rd District,” said Czarnecki. “Devin is not one who disappears after Election Day. He is constantly there for us and we deserve nothing less. He is a member of our community, volunteers in so many local organizations, and always fights for our local schools. He is what every good elected official should be and more and that’s why I am so excited to vote for him again.”

Carney, who works in finance, was first elected to the legislature in 2014. He was born and raised in Old Saybrook and lives in Old Lyme. He currently serves as ranking member of the Transportation Committee and the Transportation Bonding Subcommittee and serves on the legislative committees overseeing Education and Finance, Revenue, and Bonding. In 2019, he was named an environmental champion by the League of Conservation Voters for his work supporting renewable energy. In 2021, he received the national Rising Star Award from the Millennial Action Project, an organization dedicated to finding common solutions. He was recently named a board member of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators. In district, he serves on the boards of the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Saye Brook Senior Housing. He is also an active member of the Old Lyme Republican Town Committee, the Old Saybrook Rotary Club, the Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce, and Grace Church of Old Saybrook.
