05/10/2022 03:39 PMIt was the perfect afternoon to plant trees and give away trees on April 21 at Salt Meadow Park. Mad for Trees, co-founded by Fran Brady, is a nonprofit dedicated to planting 200 trees in Madison for the town’s 200th anniversary in 2026, gave away 44 trees (Franklinia, dogwood, red maple, mountain maple, and arborvitae) and planted 20 around the parking lot and the perimeter of the future dog park. Former Madison tree warden Bob Kuchta led the effort to get the trees into the ground.
“We would like to thank Austin Hall, Town of Madison director of the Beach & Recreation Department, and Alex Wetmore. chair of the Salt Meadow Park Advisory Committee, for supporting us through the entire process from conception; Planning & Zoning [Commission for] approval; and most importantly with the installation of a water spigot in the parking lot to help us water the new trees over their first year of growth,” said Brady.
The April 21 event is part of the group’s ongoing efforts.
“We will be planting more trees later this spring at the new Lowry Woods Community Forest once the new parking lot is completed. We also will be announcing a fall planting event soon,” Brady said. “With this tremendous start, we are well on our way to hitting the 200 tree for 200 years target in celebration of our bicentennial in 2026. Time to raise the bar perhaps to 500 trees.”
