03/09/2022 08:00 AMGuilford High School Theatre Arts (GHSTA) presents The SpongeBob Musical from Friday, March 25 to Saturday, April 2 at the Guilford High School theater.
The SpongeBob Musical is a robust, colorful musical with a great message and was named Best Musical by the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle and earned 12 Tony Award nominations. GHSTA chose to produce this show for its catchy songs, technicolor visuals, goofy humor, and its relentless positive messages about community, friendship, faith in others and the power of optimism. The show is family-friendly for all ages and GHSTA hopes that it will be a celebration each night as it is the first GHSTA musical produced for a live audience since 2019.
The show, directed by Cara Mulqueen-Teasdale, features original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, and T.I. and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny, and Andy Paley.
Technical direction is by Nick Ripa; musical direction is by Rachael Allen; orchestra direction is by Mark Gahm; and Kathryn Contessa is the choreographer.
An award-winning program both in the state of Connecticut and in New England, GHSTA features a cast, crew, and pit orchestra of more than 200 students—a full 20 percent of the Guilford High School population. More than 3,000 Guilford residents attend the spring musical each year and it has become a traditional rite of spring in town.
