After Resignation Clinton Resumes Search for Senior Program Coordinator

After its newly hired senior program coordinator resigned shortly after being hired, Clinton will once again post the job opening and look to fill the newly created position.

On Dec. 1, 2021, the town officially welcomed Lynn McCarthy to be the first senior program coordinator. About a month later, she resigned due to personal reasons Town Manager Karl Kilduff announced.

McCarthy resigned in early January and though her time was short, Kilduff said her work did have an impact.

“She resigned as her personal circumstances changes. We are grateful and appreciative of the work she was able to get started on to help build a senior program in Clinton. While her tenure was brief, her work helped lay the foundation for where our program goes in the future,” Kilduff said.

McCarthy was officially hired in November 2021. She was paid $24 an hour for 15 hours a week.

Kilduff said that the town would post position again, but cautioned it may be a while before the position is filled.

“The town will re-advertise the position seeking another individual that is self-directed and can help us create a program for the first time. Since there is no playbook or map to follow, we are looking for a unique individual. As a result, it may take some time to find the right set of skills in one person,” said Kilduff.

Under the job description, the program director would work under the town manager to coordinate and be a point person for all programs meant to serve senior population. This includes marketing, coming up with programming, performing outreach to the community to learn their needs, recruiting volunteers, and being the go-to person for all relevant town departments. The coordinator will also provide regular updates on what is happening with the senior population in town.

The idea for the position came out a desire by the Town Council members to better serve the senior population in town. For years some members of the community had complained that senior citizens were underserved in Clinton, especially when compared to what is available in other nearby communities.

Following a December 2020 report by a subcommittee on the needs of seniors in Clinton, the Town Council voted unanimously in January 2021 to establish a job for a senior program coordinator to be included in the 2021-’22 budget. Once the budget passed and the current fiscal year started in July, the town set about looking for someone to fill the role. The town will once again look to do so.
