East Haven Man Facing Multiple Charges After Barricade Incident
East Haven police have charged David Burgh, 67, with multiple charges following a Jan. 25 incident in which Burgh brandished a handgun at police while barricaded in his Stevens Street garage.
At 12:43 p.m. on Jan. 25, the East Haven Public Safety Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a female reporting a domestic incident on Stevens Street, according to the East Haven Police Department (EHPD). The caller said her husband, who fled the house and ran into a detached garage, was intoxicated and in possession of a hatchet.
Officers closed Stevens Street between Austin Avenue and Soundview Avenue. The Momauguin School was put on lockdown and bus routes from the high school and middle school were suspended until the situation was resolved.
According to the EHPD, the man “continuously pointed a hand gun at officers” from the doorway of the garage as they tried to establish communication. Officers devised a “less lethal” plan to control the subject and took him into custody. The gun brandished at police is believed to have been a BB gun.
Burgh was treated for minor injuries on scene by East Haven Fire Department personnel before being transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for evaluation.
He now faces charges of first degree threatening and reckless endangerment, interfering with police/resisting arrest, assault on police/public safety/EMS, and second degree breach of peace. Burgh was held on a $25,000 court set-bond and faced a judge on Jan. 28.
