Deep River Municipal Election Results


In Deep River, a total of 809 votes were cast, 47 by absentee ballot, in the Nov. 2 municipal election. With registered voters totaling 3,369 on Election Day, voter turnout was 24 percent, according to Town Clerk Amy Macmillan Winchell.

Democrat Angus L. McDonald, Jr., who ran unopposed, earned his third full term as Deep River first selectman with 574 votes. Incumbent Selectmen Duane Gates, a Democrat, earned 480 votes and James “Jim” Olson, a petitioning candidate, earned 234 votes.

The question posed to voters regarding the appropriation and financing of $952,053 for a school security project at John Winthrop Middle School narrowly passed in Deep River with a vote of 326 voting “Yes” and 322 voting “No.” Chester and Essex also voted in favor of the question.

In several unopposed races, Winchell was re-elected town clerk as a petitioning candidate with 526 votes, Republican Thomas W. Lindner was re-elected town treasurer with 596 votes, and Democrat Katherine Cryder was re-elected tax collector with 600 votes. Lindner was also elected agent of school deposit fund, with 534 votes.

Incumbent Democrats Carmela Balducci and George Eckenroth were seated on the Deep River Board of Finance. Balducci earned 504 votes. Eckenroth earned 543 votes. Their opponent, Republican Gary Clark, earned 297 votes and will not be seated.

For the Deep River Board of Education, Democrat Marc Lewis was re-elected with 439 votes, as was Democrat Robert Ferretti, with 426 votes. Republican Alyson Whelan, with 306 votes, and Republican Scott Hallden, with 278 votes were also seated.

To fill two-year vacancies on the Deep River Board of Education, Democrats Patricia “Pat” Maikowski with 496 votes and Lenore Grunko with 461 votes were seated along with Republican Elizabeth Scholfield, who earned 335 votes.

On the Board of Assessment Appeals, Democrat Leigh Balducci was re-elected for a six-year term with 572 votes. Democrat Jacqueline Calamari, with 587 votes, was also seated to fill a four-year vacancy.

For the Library Trustees, Democrats Linda Hall with 514 votes, Kimberly “Kim” Olson with 490 votes, and Linda Zemmel with 448 votes were seated. Democrat Lori Lenz was also seated to fill a four-year vacancy, having earned 557 votes.

Democrats Joshua Rutty with 424 votes and Robert Herrick with 398 votes were seated on the Ethics Commission. Robert John Ginder, a write-in candidate, was also seated as an alternate on the commission, having earned 14 votes.

On the Region 4 Board of Education, Democrat E. Alex Silva was seated with 510 votes. Silva will serve a six-year term.
