11/04/2021 12:00 AMAn arrest has been made in connection to a late night shooting that occurred in the rear parking lot of Rumba’s Bar and Café on Oct. 10. The incident, which was captured on exterior surveillance video, involved two individuals who were involved in a dispute inside the bar, before continuing the altercation in the parking lot where gunfire was exchanged. No injuries were sustained as a result of this incident.
Through the investigation conducted by Detective Joseph Carangelo, one of the individuals involved in the dispute was identified as Alberto Martinez, 27, of 153 Gilbert Avenue, New Haven. Martinez is seen on video surveillance engaged in a dispute with another male who appears to brandish two firearms.
During the dispute, the male points his weapon in Martinez’s direction, before walking away across the parking lot. Martinez is seen entering a dark sedan briefly, before exiting the vehicle with his own firearm. The other male is then seen firing multiple rounds into the air. Martinez is then captured on video surveillance pointing his firearm towards the direction of the other male before firing off multiple rounds across the parking lot, sending the gathering crowd scattering for cover. The unidentified second shooter can be seen on surveillance video taking cover behind a white van while returning fire in Martinez’s direction. Multiple cars, some occupied, were struck by gunfire during this incident. Martinez turned himself in to East Haven Police Headquarters on Oct. 4 and was processed. He was charged with illegal discharge of a firearm in violation of C.G.S. 53a-203, criminal attempt to commit assault in the first degree in violation of C.G.S. 53a-48/53a-59, reckless endangerment in the first degree in violation of C.G.S. 53a-63, carrying a pistol without a permit in violation of C.G.S. 29-35(a), criminal possession of a firearm in violation of C.G.S. 53a-217, and illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle in violation of C.G.S. 29-38
Martinez was held on a $500,000 court-set bond and faced a judge on Oct. 4 at G.A. 23, 121 Elm Street, New Haven.
Investigators are still trying to identify the second suspect in this incident. During the incident, a Hispanic male suspect who is believed to be in his 20s is seen wearing a red hat, black T-shirt, and dark colored jeans.
