10/13/2021 08:07 AMMeals on Wheels, in conjunction with the Guilford Community Center and the Parks & Recreation Department, is sponsoring a Veteran’s Day event that will provide a delicious meal for all who register and free to all veterans. Christie Burton, director of Guilford Interfaith Volunteers and Meals on Wheels, said this annual event is more than an opportunity to raise-much needed funds for the organization.
“This annual event that is a truly great way to honor our veterans,” said Burton.
The Thursday Nov. 11 event will be celebrating its 20th year in 2021. Organizers expect several hundred participants, so like last year this normally sit-down event will be changed due to the pandemic.
“We always want to have events in-person, but with so many people expected we didn’t feel comfortable with that many people, so we will do this like last year and have it a drive-through event,” said Burton
But Burton cautions that no one should think that means the town cares for its veterans any less.
“I always think of the quote ‘Never Forget,’ and we feel like that we should never forget what out veterans did for our country, no matter how or where they served,” said Burton.
The food will feature Larry Santamaria’s lasagna, along with salad, bread, and desert. Santamaria runs the Guilford VFW and is also the chef for Meals on Wheels, according to Burton.
“Larry is famous for his pot roast and his lasagna, whether veggie or meat,” said Burton. “Everyone loves his lasagna and they won’t be disappointed this year.”
The cost of the event for residents is $16 for adults, and veterans are served free. All of those participating must register before Friday, Nov. 5 at 12:30 p.m. The event is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 11 (Veteran’s Day) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center. Patrons can simply drive through and pick up their meals.
Those interested can call the Guilford Interfaith Volunteers office at 203-453-8359 to register or at the Parks & Recreation Department/Community Center either in person or by calling 203-453-8282.
