Saybrook Sidewalk Sales to Return After Pandemic Hiatus

After a year off, the annual Old Saybrook Sidewalk Sale is back in business. The sale will take place at participant stores during business hours from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 6 to 8.

Meryl Moskowitz, the marketing coordinator for the Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce, explained that the sidewalk sale doesn’t take place in one central location like the annual Arts & Crafts Fair on the Town Green. Instead, each business that has opted to take place in the sale participates from its location.

Additionally, each shop sets its own promotions which means that different deals are available at each different shop.

“It attracts people to come into town and check out our businesses,” Moskowitz said.

A full list of participating businesses is available on the chamber’s website www.oldsaybrookchamber.com. So far, more than 20 different shops have elected to participate and Moskowitz said that more will likely be added by time the sale gets here. The event showcases small businesses that offer everything from hardware appliances, to flowers, to running gear.

“It really highlights the diversity of our small businesses,” said Moskowitz.

To coincide with the sale, the chamber is also holding a raffle to award four winner’s money in the $aybucks program. The program consists of e-gift cards that are redeemable at about 50 different businesses in town. The gift cards are emailed to recipients and can be presented on smart phones or be printed out for use. The raffle tickets are available for purchase online via a link from the chamber homepage. The first-place prize will win $1,000 in $aybucks and three other winners will win $500 in $aybucks.

“The whole thing is to show that business is open and we welcome you to come down and shop,” Moskowitz said.

This marks the third year the chamber has held the sidewalk sale. At the first sale, Moskowitz said there were about 50 participating businesses. As with so many events, last year it was forced to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Moskowitz said that there is excitement from people now that the sale back.

“As we were planning it, people would ask ‘You’re going to do the sale again next year right?’” Moskowitz said.
