07/06/2021 12:00 AMThe North Haven Fair Association (NHFA) decided at its June meeting that the 2021 North Haven Fair will go on. The fair will be held Thursday, Sept. 9 through Sunday, Sept. 12. With COVID, the discussion of the fate of this year’s fair has been ongoing for some time.
“The board members have been planning on a fair since last year hoping the governor lifted regulations for outdoor events,” said Jeanne Lewis, member of the NHFA. “At the last meeting, the board members decided to move forward with the 2021 fair in compliance with the current COVID regulations.”
The board of directors for the NHFA is made up of 13 members. There are also about 20 volunteers who work on planning throughout the year and during the weekend of the fair, there are nearly 100 volunteers who work as supervisors, judges, and more.
A number of factors played into the NHFA’s decision to move ahead with the 2021 fair, including the number of COVID cases trending down and the vaccination rates trending up. The majority of the fair is also held outside with the few buildings with exhibits having large, open doors.
The North Haven Fair will follow all COVID guidelines and there will be hand-washing stations, as well as hand-sanitizing stations throughout the fairgrounds. As the event approaches, the NHFA will continue to monitor COVID rates and guidance from the CDC and State of Connecticut..
“The safety of our visitors, vendors, and volunteers was the top priority in making the decision,” said Lewis.
The NHFA has already begun to accept vendor applications with many fair food favorites already committed. Lewis reported that the large donuts are “an all-time favorite and people come to the fair each year to have a donut.” In addition to giant donuts, visitors can expect Greek food, regular and curly fries, ice cream, Mexican food, fried dough, and more. “The North Haven Fair offers many different types of food – some favorites are back and some new,” said Lewis. “There is always something for everyone’s taste. The vendors are still calling to get a spot so there will be many more new items.”
There will also be indoor vendors and craft vendors. For information, contact Lewis at jeanne.northhavenfair@gmail.com. There will also be exhibits in the agriculture and home arts buildings.
In addition to the petting zoo, the animal exhibits also return with cows, sheep, rabbits, and chickens. Amusement rides will be provided by Rockwell. Younger children can also enjoy the ‘Corn Patch.’
A variety of entertainment is scheduled throughout the entire fair. A full lineup will be announced as the fair date approached, but Bad Mannerz, a North Haven band, will play on Friday night and magician/comedian Robert Clark will also perform. On Sunday, wrestling will be back “by popular demand,” according to Lewis and the new motorsports arena will be open featuring tractor pulls and lawnmower racing.
“It was a positive feeling knowing the 2021 fair would be a reality,” said Lewis. “Many people were emailing and calling us hoping we would have the fair.”
