05/11/2021 12:47 PMReconstruction of a bridge in Deep River on Route 80 (Elm Street) near the former Deep River Farms will require closure of the road in early June, according to town officials. First Selectman Angus McDonald anticipates the road closure to start on Thursday, June 17 and end on Wednesday, Aug. 25.
“We’re working very hard with [the construction company] and with the state to accelerate the completion date,” said McDonald.
There has already been sporadic one-way alternating traffic on the road since construction on the bridge started last year, on Nov. 2, 2020.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) says the current bridge was built in 1916 and is rated by inspectors as being in “poor” condition.
“The bridge, like many bridges around the state, needs to be replaced,” said McDonald.
The $2,197,626 project will result in a new 47-foot clear span bridge, according to DOT.
Planning is underway to reroute traffic, which, according to the latest estimates by DOT in 2015, consists of 6,200 vehicles daily.
The project’s anticipated completion date is Oct. 14.
