Flu Vaccine Clinics Offer Protection at Critical Time
The phrase “this year more than ever” has been used so often in 2020 it’s almost meaningless, but health officials are hoping people pay attention once more: With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year it is critically important for people to get their flu vaccines. It’s also easier than ever to do so.
“For the upcoming flu season, flu vaccination will be very important to reduce flu because it can help reduce the overall impact of respiratory illnesses on the population and thus lessen the resulting burden on the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. It can also save your life,” said Scott Martinson, director of health at the Connecticut River Area Health District (CRAHD).
Two drive-through flu vaccine clinics held in recent weekends drew about 700 people, and the district has also been offering outdoor, walk-up clinics on Wednesday nights at the CRAHD office at 455 Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook.
The walk-up clinics continue each on Wednesday through Nov. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. Attendees must register on the CRAHD website www.crahd.org and vaccinations are free for those without insurance.
Martinson said that the advantage of doing the clinics this way is that the vaccines are able to be administered safely, efficiently, and quickly.
Masks are required to be worn for the clinics. According to the CRAHD website, the clinics accept Medicare Part B, Anthem BC/BS, CT Care, and Cigna. Those with other insurance or no insurance and who are over the age of 18, the fee will be $20. Those aged of 4 to 18 will not be charged and no one will be refused based on ability to pay.
Children under four will not be vaccinated and children under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian with them. The clinics have different kinds of vaccines including prefilled Thimerosal, multidose, senior high dose, Fluzone, limited Flublox for people allergic to eggs, and a limited amount of nasal vaccines as well.
