09/18/2020 12:00 AMCynthia Purcell's hoping the same community support helping to keep her Branford flower shop going through months of COVID-19 closings and cancelations will back a flower-powered local non-profit fundraising idea she's calling Solidarity Saturdays.
"For us at Cynthia's Flower Shop, contributing to our community has always been very important and especially so during these trying times," said Purcell. "I've been pretty lucky in that people have been really great about supporting me and the flower shop; so I thought it might be a good idea to come up with a way to give back."
Beginning Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., and continuing the first Saturday of every month, Cynthia's Flower Shop will offer special floral arrangements priced at $25; with 100 percent of every sale given to the month's selected local non-profit group. Proceeds from the Oct. 3 Solidarity Saturday kick-off event will benefit Branford Food Pantry, said Purcell.
"I wanted to keep it local, and that's why we're starting with Branford Food Pantry. The thought of anyone not having enough to eat is really scary," she said.
Purcell said starting the fundraising effort in October also has a special meaning for her and her local business.
"October will be my 29th year in business," said Purcell. "Twenty-nine years of people coming here for flowers is a long time! So I thought October is a good place to start Solidarity Saturdays, so we can let people know we appreciate them supporting us."
