Florida Fugitive Charged with Sex Assault on Minor Captured in Branford


On Sept. 16 at 8:30 a.m., Maurice Lewis, 33, was taken into custody in Branford by the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force and assisted by the Connecticut State Police and the New Haven Police Department. Lewis was arrested at 131 Main Street, Branford.

On Aug. 6, the Volusia County Sheriff’s office in Florida issued a warrant for Lewis charging him with one count of lewd or lascivious acts with a minor under 12 years old. The sheriff’s office enlisted the help of the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force in apprehending Lewis. The U.S. Marshals Florida-based Regional Fugitive Task Force working in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force in Connecticut tracked Lewis to the Branford area.

The U.S. Marshals, New Haven Police Department, and the Connecticut State Police worked closely together to apprehend Lewis in Branford. Lewis was apprehended without incident and was transported to the Connecticut State Police Troop G and is awaiting extradition to Volusia County, Florida.

The Violent Fugitive Task Force is a team of law enforcement officers led by U.S. Marshals from the District of Connecticut. The task force’s objective is to seek out and arrest violent fugitives and sexual predators. Membership agencies include Hartford, New Haven, Bridgeport, Norwalk, and Waterbury police departments as well as Connecticut Parole.
