Damage Still Being Assessed as Guilford Cleans Up from Another Severe Storm

Severe thunderstorms that rolled through town on Aug. 27 caused significant damage and knocked out power for between 1,000 and 2,000 Guilford residents, according to Eversource’s website.

The Guilford Police Department (GPD) reported 25 road blockages that night, though Public Works and other town personnel had worked to clear many fallen trees and debris through the next morning.

Much of the damage was concentrated in the western part of town, according to First Selectman Matt Hoey.

According to the Guilford Fire Department, two Eversource “make-safe” crews were in town on Aug. 28, starting in the southwest on Old Quarry Road and moving north and east toward Dromara and Wingate roads.

Hoey said the town was “really able to get a lot done” with the help of these crews, and roads were opened up much faster than the days following Tropical Storm Isaias.

Neighboring Branford saw much more severe winds and significant destruction, with more than 98 percent of residents losing power. The microbursts blamed for most of the damage followed a tornado that had dropped in Bethany and tore a path through to North Haven.

The National Weather Service announced it would have crews surveying damage in a handful of Connecticut towns, including Guilford.
