05/13/2020 12:00 AMDefinitive news of area high school graduation exercises may still be up in the air, but the tradition of school-color balloons still will fly in June outside homes of graduates in Branford to celebrate the Class of 2020.
To date, a recent letter to parents and guardians from Branford Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez noted efforts are being made to best honor members of the Class of 2020 while taking all needed precautions due to COVID-19; and that more information will be shared when details are available.
A May 12 district update from Hernandez included the note, "...our District is also considering appropriate and safe ways to honor students for reaching their milestones. In particular, high school graduation, and the completion of elementary and intermediate schools. Anything we plan must adhere to the guidelines/recommendations and directives of our State officials and our local health department."
Beginning in May, Branford's Project Graduation committee ramped up their annual effort to celebrate graduates with balloon deliveries; taking to Facebook and other social media to put out word to parents, family, friends and supporters. Balloons ordered through the program will be delivered to a visible point the outside of the graduate's home.
Branford's Project Graduation committee is sponsoring a program offering 18-inch red or white star shaped foil balloons to be delivered between June 12 - June 15. Balloons are $5 each, all proceeds benefit Branford High School Class of 2020. Deadline to order balloons is Friday, May 22. To receive an order form, which includes labels for notes to grads and delivery instructions, if needed, call or text: (203) 915-6224 or email: balloonsforseniorsbranfordct@gmail.com
Monday, June 15 is also noted as the last day of school on the district's most recently updated calendar (April 9, 2020).
