Habitat for Humanity Hosts Feb. 3 Reception for New Project
Middlesex Habitat for Humanity President David Evangelisti of Essex and Executive Director Sarah Bird recently hosted a reception to celebrate Habitat for Humanity’s newest build in this area in Westbrook. The three-bedroom home will be built on recently purchased land on North Hammock Road.
“If everything goes well, we hope to start building in March,” Evangelisti said.
There will be an information meeting on Monday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. in the South Conference Room of Westbrook Town Hall for people who would like to apply to purchase the home, once completed. Habitat extends a no-interest or low-interest mortgage to the buyer. Applications can also be picked up at Habitat for Humanity’s office, 34 Shunpike Road in Cromwell.
There is no fee to file an application.
“We are not giving this away; people must be working,” Evangelistic pointed out.
A would-be buyer of the Habitat-constructed home must earn from 25 to 60 percent of the area’s median income and must participate with Habitat for Humanity in construction. Each family member over 18 is required to contribute 200 hours of sweat equity.
Habitat for Humanity is also looking for volunteers both to contribute to and work on the new build. Information is available at www.middlesexhabitat.org.
