For the past four years, D.H. Ferrara Elementary School has partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Connecticut to host a week-long fundraising and awareness event in support of the Branford Walk Like MADD. Starting on Sept. 30, the students took a lap around their track each day during recess and collected donations from family and friends. The final lap was taken together as a school on Oct. 4.

This year the students were joined by the for State Representative Joseph Zullo (R-99), representatives from the East Haven Police Department, Superintendent of Schools Erica Forti, and members of the East Haven Board of Education. In recognition of their hard work, the top fundraising class was awarded a pizza party from MADD Connecticut and the top 25 student fundraisers received special prizes.

The school was also awarded the Top Academic Team prize from the Branford Walk Like MADD, which took place on Oct. 5. Ferrara School raised $1,365.60 at the fourth annual walk. Thanks to the dedication of D.H. Ferrara Elementary School Principal Paul DeBernardo, event coordinator and 4th grade teacher Lori Chamberlain, school staff, and the student body, Ferrara has raised more than $5,600 for MADD Connecticut over the course of the last four years. The partnership between MADD Connecticut and Ferrara School not only raises awareness and teaches the children about the dangers of underage drinking and impaired driving, it also shows the kids that they can make a difference, even in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.
