Lulaj Overwhelmingly Wins Killingworth GOP Primary
Republican Francesco Lulaj will face incumbent Democrat Cathy Iino for the Killingworth first selectman seat following a landslide primary victory on Sept. 10. Lulaj, who was endorsed by the Republican Town Committee (RTC), defeated challenger Robert P. Sassi by 409 to 92.
Party-endorsed candidates won across the board, with RTC-endorsed selectmen candidates Eileen Blewett (377 votes) and Nancy Gorski (351 votes) retaining their spots against challenger John A. Samperi (129 votes). Blewett and Gorski will face incumbent Democrat Lou Annino, Jr., in a contest for two seats on the board.
For the Board of Finance, RTC-endorsed Andrew J. O’Neill (393 votes) also prevailed; joining him on the GOP ballot line for finance will be challengers Leo J. Bombalicki, Jr. (200 votes) and John F. Psenicnik (204 votes); Marcella O. Sassi, with 131 votes, did not win a ballot position. Bombalicki, O’Neill, and Psenicnik will face Democrats Marcel Couture and Robert Rimmer in the November race.
The GOP primary brought in 504 votes (including 22 absentee ballots), 37 percent of the town’s 1,358 registered Republicans.
