Essex Elementary School (EES) student Kaydence Chambers’s winning invention of A Girl’s Best Friend at EES annual Invention Convention not only took her to nationals in the spring, but has now landed her a guest spot on the kids talk show Wonderama.

The invention, which sprang forth from Chambers’s busy after school schedule, traveling from cheerleading practice to dance practice, is an on-the-go hair brush equipped with an attached container for all the necessities, such as hair ties, bobby pins, ChapStick, and Band Aids, etc.

“I always have all my stuff in a bag and I have to dig around in there when I need something, so I came up with this invention so everything is right where I need it in one spot,” said Chambers.

She took this innovative invention to the national level Invention Convention in Detroit, Michigan in May and although she didn’t win one of the top three spots there for her age group, she made some great friends, learned a lot, went on some amazing tours of Henry Ford’s museum and 80-acre compound, and subsequently got recognized by the Wonderama television show, not only for her invention, but also for her calm, cool, and collected on camera presence; witnessed on her YouTube explanation of her invention.

In early August, Chambers and her family went to New York to film her segment of Wonderama’s kid inventors.

“My favorite part of being on the show was getting pampered in hair and make-up before filming,” said Chambers, who was one of three child inventors; the others were from New Hampshire and Texas.

Chambers, who is already thinking ahead to next year’s upcoming Invention Convention at EES, said, “I love inventing new things, and solving everyday problems.”

Her mother, Candace Hardgrove, said, “This whole experience has been so great for Kaydence. She has learned so much, met so many new people who have turned into friends and just experienced so much it’s really be wonderful.”

While in Detroit, Chambers was impressed by the other inventors. There were 493 kids from 23 different states and three countries (Mexico, Singapore, and China) who attended nationals.

“The kids learned a lot about patents and inventing and got a chance to network and makes friends. It was a very exciting experience for her to be able to be a part of and something I think she will remember forever,” said Hardgrove.

Chambers is currently in the process of bringing her invention to production and hopes to have some ready for Christmas this year. She already has requests and orders for the time-saving, space-saving solution to a girl’s bag of hair care, and is looking to make contact with someone with a 3D printer or making A Girl’s Best Friend out of wood.

Her segment of Wonderama will be aired on WCTX. At press time, the air date had not been solidified.
