07/03/2019 07:48 AMStarting this Sunday, July 7, the music of Woodstock will see a revival right here on the Guilford Green. The popular annual Concert on the Green summer series kicks-off this week and continues each Sunday until kids get ready to head back to school.
The theme of this year’s concert series is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. The concerts, sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department, are held each Sunday through the end of August and feature a series of different musical acts. Parks & Recreation Director Rick Maynard said a variety of professional and tribute bands are coming to town for the rest of the summer.
“It’s the 50th anniversary of Woodstock so the first band that is playing—CJ West & Downtown Train—all of the songs they are going to do will be songs from Woodstock,” he said. “…The tribute bands lined up are also really, really good.”
The concerts are free and open to the public. They are paid out of the Parks & Recreation program budget. If it looks like rain, the concerts are moved to the nearby Nathanael B. Greene Community at 32 Church Street, Guilford. Maynard previously said if the weather looks threatening, he usually makes the call on location at 3 p.m. before the show.
Anywhere from 500 to 1,200 people attend the concerts and weather is always a big factor when it comes to turnout. The first concert is July 7 at 6:30 p.m. Maynard said the department is starting the concert series a little earlier than usual this year, before the annual fireworks on Saturday, July 13.
“We don’t usually do a concert this early, but we are giving it a try,” he said.
On July 28, the band Leaf Jumpers will take the stage and play a series of hits from Woodstock ’99 including music from Counting Crows, Dave Matthews Band, and Rusted Root. On Aug. 11, the band Who’s Next, a tribute band, will play all of The Who’s greatest hits. On Aug. 18 Milagro, a Santana tribute band, will take the stage. Finally, on Aug. 25, CNS Songs, a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute band. will wrap up the concert series.
The Concerts on the Green are Sundays at 6:30 p.m. To confirm location based on the weather, call the Parks & Recreation weather line at 203-453-8134. Residents are reminded no smoking or vaping of any substance or alcohol is allowed on the green per town ordinance.
