'Images of Clinton' Coming to Locals Shelves in June

Clinton resident Peggy Adler’s latest book, Images of America: Clinton, which chronicles the history of town, will be available for purchase on Monday, June 3.

The book is being published by Arcadia Publishing, and is part of a series that currently contains more than 1,000 entries. Each book tells the history of a town through captions and photographs. The Clinton book is 127 pages with 194 photographs and maps.

The book is now available online from retail giants like Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble, but Adler said there will be plenty of opportunity to buy the book much closer to home. Adler has been reaching out to local stores to see if they would be interested in carrying the book, or even hosting a signing.

Bookstores along the shoreline like Breakwater Books in Guilford and R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison have said they would carry her book and each host a signing, according to Adler. Some establishments that may not traditionally carry books but are well known to Clinton residents have also expressed an interest in carrying the book. Locations such as Nataz restaurant, Clinton Sports Shop, and Cedar Island Marina all told Adler they would be interested in stocking the book.

Adler said she was told that many transient boaters who dock at Cedar Island during the summer don’t just depart the next day. Rather, many come into town and look at the old buildings and scenery, which means Adler’s book could serve as a kind of guide for the visitors.

“I was surprised and delighted,” Adler said.

Adler said that two locations that agreed to hold the book that stand out in her mind are the Yale University Book Store and Lobster Landing.

“I told Lobster Landing they were on the cover and they were amazed,” Adler said.

Yale’s bookstore stood out to Adler because Yale University actually was founded in Clinton. The store asked Adler to host a signing there in August as the new freshmen are entering the school.

“Anybody who wants to do a signing I’ll do it. I’m honored anyone would want me to,” Alder said.

In fact, Yale’s birth in Clinton is what led Adler to complete this book. In May 2018, an Arcadia Publishing representative contacted Adler after finding her essay “The Birth of Yale” on the Clinton town website. The company reached out to gauge Adler’s interest in writing the book, and she signed on officially soon after. Adler said that due to concerns over possible health issues, she asked for and received a two-year deadline extension. However, those concerns proved to be unnecessary as she turned in her work around Thanksgiving.

While she made quick work of the book, don’t expect Adler to be churning out any more books in the near future.

“I don’t have any plan for a project. I never thought I’d do another book,” said Adler.

Adler’s previous books were published in the 1970s.

“I had never planned on this book so that was a surprise, said Adler.

During the time she was writing the book, Adler said she was surprised and impressed by all the history she was able to uncover in the small town.

“This was exciting to me I’m finding things out about this town I’ve lived in since 1994. Who knew this little town has so many interesting things?” Adler said. “I had so much fun and met so many wonderful people. The acknowledgment page is quite full.”
