What’s the Story with the Exit 66 Construction?

Anyone getting off I-95 at Exit 66 in Old Saybrook and heading south on Spencer Plains Road might be curious about the building under construction beside the Super 8 Motel.

That structure will eventually be Saybrook Storage, a three-story, climate-controlled self-storage facility with a planned footprint of just over 21,800 square feet, a building area of nearly 65,500 square feet, and space for more than 20 cars to park.

The applicant on town permits is Spencer 95 LLC of East Hampton, which applied to the Zoning Board of Appeals for a variance to build three stories as opposed to the allowable 2 ½ stories.

In May 2017, the Zoning Commission granted a special exception permit with three conditions, including the specification that there would be no hazardous materials stored anywhere on the property. A “Zoning Commission-approved alternative landscaping scheme along the Amtrak railroad line” was another condition.

According to owner Rand Construction of East Hampton, to which Spencer 95 LLC belongs, the project should be completed and open in September or October of this year.
