The intersection of Routes 1 and 22 near the Branford/Guilford intersection can be a challenge for drivers during peak traffic times. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is considering a plan to turn the intersection into a roundabout and, as part of that process, will hold a public information session on Thursday, Jan. 10 at Guilford Fire Headquarters to talk to residents about the plan.

Making a change to that intersection has been a longstanding discussion. According to the DOT, the current configuration has led to a number of “right angle crashes” over the years.

According to a press release from the DOT, “The proposed project will construct a modern three-legged roundabout to replace the T-intersection, remove the existing spur connection, reconfigure access to a business, and reconfigure access to a residential driveway. The approach roadways will be modified to introduce moderate curvature for the deflection of vehicles to reduce their speed as they approach the roundabout. Raised splitter islands and a raised center island with a truck apron will be installed to channelize traffic and direct vehicles through the new configuration. Pedestrian improvements, including sidewalks, crosswalks, and splitter island refuge areas, will be included.”

Based on the initial designs, changes involving drainage and the addition of sidewalks will extend beyond the current state-right-of-way. Temporary construction easements will be needed before work can begin.

The goal now is to have the project begin in spring 2020, but the start date depends on funding. The project is anticipated to cost $3.3 million with 80 percent of the project federally funded and the remaining 20 percent through state funds.

DOT personnel will attend the public information session to explain the project and plans will be available for review. The plans are also currently available a the Guilford, Branford, and North Branford town halls.

The public information session is Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. at Guilford Fire Headquarters, 390 Church Street. In the event of inclement weather, the public information session will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, same time and location.
