Clinton audiences will have a unique opportunity to hear music that’s hugely popular in films, TV, and more—but rarely performed live—for the next free concert in the George Flynn Classical Concert Series. On Sunday, Nov. 4, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, along with the Chorus of Westerly, will be performing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and more at The Morgan School.

According to a press release, the Carmina Burana is “best known for its powerhouse opening and closing movement, ‘O Fortuna.’” The show will also feature works by Tchaikovsky and Carl Maria von Weber.

The symphony will be conducted by William Boughton and feature guest vocalists Lisa Williamson, Tim Fallon, and Zachary Johnson.

Boughton called the music the symphony will perform a “tour de force” that will “certainly raise the roof off the new Morgan auditorium.”

“It’s always a pleasure coming out to Clinton,” Boughton said. “I hope that [attendees] are elevated, excited, and admire the beauty of the music.”

Elaine Godowsky, president of the concert series, said the New Haven Symphony Orchestra was chosen for this concert because the group had always had a good relationship with the concert series. Godowsky said she, too, is excited for this concert because Carmina Burana isn’t often performed due to the large number of musicians the piece requires. For this concert, there will be more than 200 musicians on the stage.

“We had to measure the stage a couple of times,” Godowsky said.

Describing Carmina Burana as a “very stirring and powerful piece,” Godowsky promised, “The school will be rocking.”

The George Flynn Classical Concert Series series features performers of a varied background and features musical styles from popular music to classical, which Godowsky said is a strength of the series.

“We try and mix it up,” Godowsky said. “We get thank you notes for the variety.”

The next concert in the series will be a holiday concert by the U.S. Coast Guard Woodwind Quintet on Sunday, Dec. 9.

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra and the Chorus of Westerly performs Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and works by Tchaikovsky and Carl Maria von Weber at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4 in The Morgan School Auditorium. As part of the George Flynn Classical Concert Series, the concert is free. To attend, free tickets can be obtained by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to George Flynn Classical Concerts, P.O. Box 473, Clinton, CT 06413 or calling 860-669-1208.
