More Than Just Books: Branford Friends' of Blackstone Library Book Sale Sept. 27 - 30
Where can you dig up rare book finds, bags of book bargains, your favorite storybook character created from a pumpkin, some great eats and activities, events and happenings? At the Sept. 27 – Sept. 30 Friends of the James Blackstone Memorial Library Book Sale on the Branford green.
Following this year's theme "More than Just Books," the Friends are also teaming up with Trinity Episcopal Church on the green to add some scheduled fun on Friday ("Hogwarts Happenings" with the Trinity Church Fair 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.) and Saturday (Community Day and the Trinity Church Fair). Sunday brings a new offering of an acoustic concert featuring Rob Glassman Music.
The big book sale will be back on the Branford green Thurs. Sept. 27 - Sun. Sept. 30. The book sale event is a huge draw, thanks in no small part to a gigantic tent the Friends fill with over 70,000 gently-donated books, all offered at rock-bottom prices. None of the books are from library inventory; all are donated to the Friends from the community throughout the year.
The Friends' annual book sale features over 20 categories of books as well as CDs, DVDs and more. The sale kicks off Thursday Sept. 27 with its 5 -7 p.m. Preview Event (free to Friends members, $15 to dealers and walk-ins; free admission from 7 p.m. – midnight). The sale continues Friday, Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. - midnight; Saturday, Sept. 29, 8 a.m. – midnight and Sunday, Sept. 30, noon -3 p.m. It features regular hardcover books for $3, trade paperbacks, $2, coffee table books $5 and up; pocket paperbacks 50 cents, DVDs $2 and CDs $1 (sets priced as marked). On Sunday, fill a Friends' provided extra-large bag (big enough for 20 hardcovers), for just $10.
On "Community Day" Saturday, Sept. 29, the Friends' book sale will share the green with Trinity Church's 111th annual Church Fair. The fair offers a blueberry Pancake Breakfast 7:30–10:30 a.m., lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and features a Silent Auction, Jewelry, Baked Goods, Tag Sale, Labyrinth, Kidz Corner, and kids' games. In addition, Community Day participants on Saturday will be bringing local environmental exhibits to the green, including those from Branford Land Trust, Friends of Outer Island, Shoreline Greenway Trail, Yale Peabody Museum's Geology Exhibit, and Boy Scouts of America.
Each day during the Friends' book sale, "Café Blackstone" will be selling Hummel hot dogs, baked macaroni and cheese by Shoreline Café, chocolate chip brownies, cinnamon buns, crumb cake, chips, lemonade, water and coffee.
