Thanks to an unexpected gift of $10,000 received this summer, the volunteers of Homemaker Thrift Shop have been able to give $14,000 to Branford charitable efforts in the past three months.

The $10,000 contribution, together with $4,000 from Homemaker fundraising efforts, was divided up as donations supporting six charitable causes in town. The sum allowed Homemaker’s to give $2,500 each to Branford Food Pantry, Community Dining Room, Branford Counseling Center and Orchard House Medical Adult Day Center and $2,000 each to Branford Emergency Fuel Assistance Fund and Branford Medical Transport programs.

Homemaker’s president, Pat Mansfield, said the $10,000 contribution was given by a relative of a volunteer.

Organized in 1976, non-profit Homemaker Thrift Shop is currently celebrating its 42nd year. Over the past four decades, the Branford organization has raised well over $400,000 which has been distributed in the community. The group regularly makes annual donations to the six charities, and recently began efforts to support another Branford charity, Feed Branford Kids, said Mansfield.

“We had a special sale for Feed Branford Kids; and we have a special account for anyone who wants to donate consignable items and the profits go to Feed Branford Kids,” said Mansfield.

Homemaker Thrift Shop raises funds by taking in contributions of items for resale through the store, located at 4 Brushy Plains Road. All thrift shop sale proceeds benefit local Branford charitable causes. Homemaker volunteers donate their time to help stock inventory contributed by community members and others. Many of the volunteers have been with Homemaker’s for 15 to 25 years.

Homemaker Thrift Shop is located at 4 Brushy Plain Road in the Brushy Plain Plaza (Unit 115). Hours: Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. — 4 p.m. For more information, call (203) 481-5161.
