Nutritious Breakfast and Lunch, All Summer Long in East Haven

The numbers are stark: more than 50 percent of East Haven’s roughly 3,000 students are eligible for free or reduced breakfasts and lunches during the school year. Over the 180 days of the school year, that’s 360 chances for those families to receive a boost to their limited budgets and for the kids to get nutritious meals.

So what happens in the summer?

Fortunately for those East Haven families, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funding allows East Haven Public Schools to offer free breakfast and lunch five days a week through the Summer Food Service Program administered by the Connecticut State Department of Education.

The meals, which are available to any East Haven student aged 18 or younger, are served at four schools: Deer Run School, 311 Foxon Road; East Haven High School (EEHS), 35 Wheelbarrow Lane; Joseph Melillo Middle School (JMMS), 67 Hudson Street; and Tuttle School, 108 Prospect Road. The schedules vary, as do the dates of service.

Meal service ends Friday, July 20 at EHHS and JMMS. At the high school, breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m.; the middle school serves breakfast from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

At Deer Run School, the meals are offered through Friday, Aug. 10 with breakfast from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11 to 11:30 a.m. The Tuttle School program runs through Friday, Aug. 17, with breakfast from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m.
