06/29/2018 12:00 AMThe Madison Hose Co. No # 1 was called to a home on Warpas Road early in the morning of June 29 to find a burning home and all occupants standing outside. No injuries have been reported but officials on the scene said the home was seriously damaged.
Madison Hose Chief Bobby Kyttle said the department got the call around 1:30 a.m. and received mutual aid from North Madison, Guilford, Clinton, and Killingworth. When firefighters arrived on scene, smoke was clearly visible from the exterior of the building.
"The first thing we did is make sure with the occupants that they were all out of the building and accounted for – a total of six males and one dog," he said. "We gained entry into the house, located the fire behind the first floor stairwell and in the bedroom areas, major smoke and heat damage from the fire, no injuries reported and red cross was called to assist with the six gentlemen."
At about 4:30 a.m. the home was turned over to the Fire Marshals office to determine the cause of the fire.
"The Fire Marshal is still investigating now to figure out what the cause of the fire was," he said. "[The home] took a lot of damage so I don't know if they would renovate or knock it down at this time."
Kyttle said he called the Red Cross immediately to help the six individuals. The Red Cross sent out a press release this morning confirming the organization is providing assistant to meet immediate needs.
"The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant; shaving supplies and other items a resident might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire," the release read. "In addition, a recovery envelope containing information helpful to families recovering from a fire, including tips on cleanup; notification of important contacts; dealing with damaged items and more was provided.
"Those affected will meet with Red Cross caseworkers in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan. The Red Cross is able to provide assistance through the generosity of our donors and the commitment of our volunteers."
The home is reportedly a home for men in recovery from substance abuse and is run by Guilford-based Lifelinx Corporation.
