06/05/2018 03:00 PMHundreds of residents gathered on the Guilford Green on June 3 to participate in the National Gun Violence Awareness Day and Wear Orange event, a movement designed to demand a future free from gun violence.
The event was a community picnic to raise gun violence awareness organized by gun violence prevention activists of all ages, including the local chapter of Mom’s Demand Action. The event included games for kids, musical performances, and food.
According to a press release on the event, more than 90 Americans are shot and killed and hundreds more are injured by gun violence every day. The color orange, worn by many attendees at the June 3 event, is intended to symbolize the value of human life and “reminds us that we are united by our shared hope that we can create a safer country for all Americans—and not just some.”
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story included a photo of Boy Scout Troop 474's annual Strawberry Social fundraiser, which also occurred on June 3 on the green, but was an independent event.
