Decision Made: Foote Park Launches Branford Fireworks Display
Branford's June 23 fireworks display will go on at a new alternate site, Foote Park.
The decision that the show will go on was made May 30 and shared by the all-volunteer Fireworks Committee. Committee leaders met with First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove, Branford Fire Chief Kevin Halloran, Deputy Chief and Fire Marshall Shaun Heffernan, Branford Parks and Recreation Director Alex Palluzzi and Assistant Director Dale Izzo and Public Works' Gary Zielinski on May 30 to make the determination. More updates on what's taking place at Foote Park will follow next week, according to a note posted at the Branford Fireworks Facebook page on the morning of May 31.
Last week, following a disappointing test flight of mortars launched from the committee's first alternative location, Ecology Park, the committee announced that a new location would be pursued. One issue the Fireworks Committee worked to resolve was finding a location to launch the fireworks so the display could be readily viewed by members of the public in gathering places including Foote Park.
The fireworks are usually launched from the town dock at Branford Point but the location was not available this year due to state construction work to replace the Harbor Street bridge, which will remain closed through early September 2018.
The professional pyrotechnics display will go off at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. Rain date for the fireworks display will be Sunday, June 24.
