Chartwells Continuing as Branford Schools' Food Service Provider
Branford Public Schools' Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez issued a press release today, May 21, announcing that Chartwells division of Compass Group will continue providing the district's food service, following a "competitive bidding process" for the district's next food service provider.
The decision includes a proposal from the company which will deliver a "modest, guaranteed operating surplus," giving the Board of Education (BOE) needed play to "mitigate the level of financial assistance provided to the food service program," Hernandez' statement continued.
The decision impacts 22 members of Local Union 217 who are employed by Chartwells at Branford public schools. Branford Chartwells employees have been actively voicing concerns to the BOE about the potential loss of their jobs should Chartwells discontinue serving the district.
"We look forward to working with the Chartwells staff to provide an outstanding food service operation for the district's children," Hernandez stated.
Hernandez noted Chartwells will also once again provide meals as part of Branford Public Schools' Summer Meals program, running this summer from June 25 through August 24.
