In North Branford, A New Way to Celebrate Earth Day
In the past, some have volunteered to pick up litter around town on Earth Day; but on Saturday, April 21, North Branford introduces a new way to celebrate Earth Day, with an information and display event where residents can instead pick up tips on town-wide recycling opportunities. The informative event will also help residents of all ages learn more about how some local businesses are pitching in to help; from joining in recycling programs to making it their business to provide earth-friendly products.
The town's North Branford Hazardous Waste & Recycling committee is organizing the event, which will begin at 9 a.m. and run until about 3 p.m. on Sat. April 21 at Wall Field (Route 22 behind North Branford Police Department). The committee's planning some eye-catching displays to help grab the attention of the numerous families and residents already planning to be at Wall Field that morning and afternoon for North Branford Little League Opening Day events, said Earth Day publicity volunteer Bill Savastano.
By making information readily available at Wall Field, the committee hopes to get residents involved, if even for a few minutes, in learning the latest about what they can recycle and other earth-friendly news impacting their town. The April 21 North Branford Earth Day event will be devoted to "awareness" said Savastano.
Displays such as big bags filled recyclable plastic film -- from bubble wrap to the wrapping around a package of paper towels -- will help remind residents that the film can be recycled by dropping it off at particiating town businesses and organizations. Another display will be built from pizza boxes, another item residents may not realize they can recycle, said Savastano. And, to encourage residents to do some "out of the box" thinking when it comes to recycling, Savastano will set up a display of artwork he's created from re-purposed wood.
North Branford Hazardous Waste & Recycling Committee and local businesses will also have some tables set up under tents near the field, where they will be displaying products and services related to earth-friendly programs in the community.
