Flynn Concerts Welcomes Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
Music fans of all ages have the opportunity to witness—for free—a unique concert experience when the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain comes to the Andrews Memorial Town Hall Auditorium as part of The George Flynn Classical Concerts series at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 22.
The orchestra will showcase its Heresy II Heritage Tour, which, pokes fun at the stiff upper lip of the ensemble’s British roots, according to the orchestra, and will include music from their recent studio album, By Request: Songs from the Setlist—a selection of fan favorites that ranges from the Beverly Hillbillies theme to AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.”
Elaine Godowsky, president of The George Flynn Classical Concert series, said this concert is the first time the group has been featured in the series.
“It’s a new experiment,” Godowsky said. “The whole series is eclectic, so we thought we’d try something new.”
Godowsky said the group’s musical selections of classical and popular music means that “the audience will recognize everything.”
While the group hasn’t performed in Clinton before, the group has played in some notable venues such as Carnegie Hall and Windsor Castle. While the Andrews Memorial Town Hall Auditorium, with about 450 seats, isn’t as prestigious as those previous venues, Godowsky said the building is a nice venue for this concert due to the group’s penchant for interacting with the audience.
Godowsky said the concert has received a lot of interest on the George Flynn Classical Concerts Facebook page. She said the group “doesn’t usually play around here,” and is headed back to Europe after this concert.
Every concert in the series is free, thanks to a trust established in 1997 by the late George Flynn of Clinton, but the tickets must be requested in advance.
Godowsky said that while this concert series has been successful, there has been an issue of some spectators reserving tickets and then not attending the concert, which leads to some residents who wanted to attend the concert not being able to do so.
“If you find you can’t come, call!” Godowsky said.
