04/02/2018 05:05 PMOn Tues. April 3, Branford Families will offer its next free program for families with children and caregivers, "Schools and the Lay of the Digital Land," as part of its 2018 monthly series "Raising Healthy Families in the Digital Age." The April 3 program takes place at 6:30 p.m. at Walsh Intermediate School (WIS) 185 Damascus Road.
Participants will hear a discussion from professionals on the WIS staff on digital school use by students with topics including screen time, devices used, discussion on the 1:1 ratio, rules and regulations and handling "what if" scenarios during school hours. The April program is sponsored by Branford Cares and Lynda Mollow.
Branford Families is an all-volunteer, grassroots group of parents who have banded together to provide developmental resources to assist Branford families. For the workshop series, the group's collaborated with the Branford school district; particularly through WIS and principal Raeanne Reynolds, to help address issues of technology and social media impact within schools and as a community, said Branford Families member and parent Celia Toché.
"The project is about opening conversation and providing tools for families to nurture healthy habits and growth in their child's citizenship in the digital world," she noted.
Branford Families has also announced it's May 2018 program, "Appy Hour," set for Wed. May 23 at Branford Fire Headquarters community room (45 North Main St.). The hands-on workshop (bring your own device) will bring in technicians who will take participants through current apps kids are prone to use, and discuss parental controls, safety filters and more. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.). The May workshop is sponsored by Branford Cares, Lynda Mollow and Enterprise Computers LLC.
The monthly "Raising Healthy Families in the Digital Age" programs kicked off with a January screening of the documentary "Screenagers" followed by a panel discussion. The final workshop takes place in June.
