Clinton Sailing Club Offers Evening of Fun to Benefit Local Kids

On Saturday, March 10 at 6 p.m., those looking to shed the cold of winter and help contribute to helping children enjoy the Clinton shoreline can attend the Clinton Sailing Club (CSC) second annual Shindig at the Clinton Country Club located at 128 Old Post Road.

The event will last about four hours and feature cocktails, dinner, and a silent auction. Tickets to the event, which are on sale now at http://clintonsailingclub.org, cost $75 a person or $500 for a table of eight.

CSC President Alan Felgate said the event in 2017 raised $5,000.

“It all goes to sailing for summer 2018,” Felgate said, noting that the organization’s annual fundraising goal is $20,000.

The bulk of the money raised at the event will go toward “sailorships,” a week of sailing lessons valued at $250 made available for children between ages 8 and 18.

“The sailorships are awarded on financial needs,” Felgate said.

Felgate there’s a short writing assignment to go along with the sailorships.

“There’s simple questions like ‘Why do you like to sail?’ and ‘What do you get out of it?’” Felgate said. Felgate said that 12 of the sailorships, a value of $3,000, have been provided through a grant from the Community Foundation of Middlesex County.

The CSC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that declares itself “dedicated to promoting safe, active, and fun community sailing.” The organization started 2016, and has quickly become a popular draw in the community. In 2017 the organization taught 200 kids how to sail, and offered expanded programs. Felgate expects the popularity to extend into 2018.

Felgate said the CSC will offer 4 levels of youth sailing, as well as a community sailing program for adults and families.

“We’re working out the details about that program,” Felgate said. “Women’s sailing was a big success; it went very well. We’re continuing to build our program...We continue to show high demand.”

Felgate said that enrollment for the summer courses will begin soon, and here will be a discount available for early enrollment. For more information, visit http://clintonsailingclub.org.
