01/06/2018 04:26 PMResidents who are making an effort to participate in the town’s plastic film recycling program have helped North Branford Solid/Hazardous Waste and Recycling Committee gather over 3,200 pounds of recycled film in the past year, according to information shared by the committee with the Town Council on Jan. 2.
As an added bonus, the town has now earned two eco-friendly benches from manufacturer Trex®. The composite benches, made from a blend of 95% recycled wood and plastic film, are earned when participating towns recycle 500 pounds of plastic film per year.
In a North Branford CT Hazardous Waste & Recycling Committee Facebook post, committee member Hank Petroskey noted the first bench received by the town arrived in Sept. 2017 and was awarded to the North Branford School to Work Program. It was given as a thank you to program teachers and students for dedicating several days per week to gather and sort plastic film items dropped off by residents.

Acceptable plastic film, according to online information from North Branford Solid/Hazardous Waste and Recycling Committee here , include “plastic bags such as grocery bags, newspaper sleeves, produce bags, bread bags, dry cleaning bags, ice bags, wood pellet bags, salt bags, and zipper bags [and] plastic wraps from water bottle cases, diapers, bathroom tissue, and paper towels, as well as bubble wrap and shipping pillows. Plastic bags with recycling symbols #2 or #4 are accepted.”
In North Branford, several local merchants and organizations have teamed up with the committee to become collection sites for plastic film recycling. Collection bins are located at Country Paint and Hardware, T.J’s Launderette, North Branford Town Hall, Atwater Town Library, Edward Smith Town Library, Stanley T. Williams Community Center, Northford Store and The Food Pantry of North Branford.
In addition, Big Y and Stop and Shop, as well as Target and Wal-Mart are chain retailers across the state accepting plastic film recycling in bins at the front of stores.
What is not accepted for plastic film recycling are plastic bags with recycling symbols #5 or #7 as well as snack bags (chips, candy, etc.), pet food bags, frozen food bags, and any bags with food residue. The committee also notes that, while the growing list of items being accepted for plastic film recycling are welcome at any of the collection points, the same items cannot be placed in residents’ regular blue recycling bins.
