Lovely Linden is a Branford 'Notable Tree'
Take a look at this remarkable Linden tree (tilia americana), also known as American Basswood. It is located on Linden Avenue, opposite Montgomery Parkway. This photo shows the Linden in full summer leaf.
Lindens are very large trees with straight trunks. It is not uncommon for a Linden to have more than one trunk on a single trunk, but this beauty has five trunks (only 4 visible in the provided photo). The trunks range from 60 to 80 inches in circumference; and the tree is approximately 70 feet tall.
When the Linden is in flower, it is full of bees, hence its nickname "bee tree." There is a separate Linden visible to the right; and this grove is probably how Linden Avenue got its name.
Branford's Community Forest Commission hopes to continue to share photos and information of additional Branford Notable Trees, to help increase public awareness of the importance of the town's trees.
