Sign Up Your Scarecrow for Branford's 'Scarecrows on the Green'
The Branford Garden Club (BGC) is seeking scarecrows to fill the seventh annual "Scarecrows on the Green" coming Friday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Nov. 5. The annual display has become a fall favorite for residents and visitors strolling the green to inspect each creation up close.
The scarecrows may be silent, but their signs and unique designs make them a great "spokescrow" during the display, which runs over two weeks and includes three weekends. Scarecrow creators come from local businesses, clubs, schools, organizations, non-profits and even families or individuals.
All proceeds support the club's Branford beautification projects. Participants need to sign up their scarecrows in advance by downloading a registration application here and sending the completed form, together with a check for any donation amount desired, to BGC c/o 39 Short Beach Road, East Haven CT 06512. No time to make a scarecrow? Donations of any amount are always welcomed by BGC. Questions? Email rodneyfhayes@yahoo.com
BGC first built Scarecrows on the Green as a fundraiser in 2011 to help restore town plantings destroyed by Hurricane Irene. Since then, the annual event's blossomed into an eye-catching fall favorite which helps support ongoing efforts of BGC.
BGC's efforts to beautify Branford include planting and maintaining Main Street's baskets, the town green Veterans Memorial Garden (at the flagpole) and Mae McCabe Memorial Day Lilly Garden, as well as historic Harrison House's Alta Newton Memorial Herb Garden and border garden. BGC is also instrumental in supporting civic development projects, such as the development and continued maintenance of Rosenthal Gardens. Through the years, members have planted thousands of daffodil gardens around town to help residents welcome spring. BGC also contributes festive wreaths and décor to Branford's public libraries, Town Hall and New Haven's Ronald McDonald House, as well as regularly supplying table arrangements to brighten the Community Dining Room.
