North Branford TVES Students Gather Funds, Supplies to Help Houston
On Labor Day weekend, Totoket Valley Elementary School (TVES) fifth-grade teacher Megan Reyher and students set up a donation/collection center outside of Tractor Supply Company in Guilford (near the North Branford town line) to provide relief for those impacted by the hurricane and flooding in the Houston TX area. Over the course of two days, students were able to raise over $1,000 in monetary donations, supplies, and pet supplies.
With the help of Reyher and parent Rick Esposito, the supplies were collected and transported to TVES. A few days later, with the support of TVES security guard Art Huggins and Esposito, all supplies were loaded and brought to Shelton, where they were loaded again onto a freight truck for shipment to Texas.
The combined effort by staff, students, and families as well as Tractor Supply Co. resulted in a wonderful learning experience for TVES and a great show of support by the North Branford community. All classrooms at TVES will be following Reyher's lead during the 2017-2018 school year, and engaging in service learning/community projects to foster 21st century skill development and to support continued learning about character and communities. Way to go TVES; we are so proud of your efforts and we know the animals and families in the Houston area thank you!
TVES and those who participated would also like to extend a big thank you to Tractor Supply Co. and all of their generous customers who supported the event.
