Westbrook Looking for Zoning Help, New IT Services

Zoning Support

Following months of unsuccessful searching for a qualified zoning enforcement officer (ZEO) to take former ZEO’s Nancy Rudek’s position, the Board of Selectmen recently approved an arrangement that will bring temporary staff to act as part-time ZEOs until the town can make a permanent hire for the position.

After two unsuccessful open searches for a ZEO, First Selectman Noel Bishop sought part-time help as an interim arrangement. He reached out to the regional Council of Governments (RiverCOG), an organization of which Westbrook is a member, for help.

Starting this month, two planners from the River COG staff, Torrance Downes and Dan Bourret, will work alternately two days a week in Westbrook’s town Land Use Office, stepping in to act as part-time ZEOs. The interim ZEOs will work on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Thursdays, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Downes is already familiar with Westbrook having worked for the town on zoning issues early in his career and, more recently, been assigned by the RiverCOG to work with the town’s Harbor Management Commission to write the town’s first Harbor Management Plan.

Town IT RFP Released

On July 27, the Board of Selectmen approved release of a request for proposal (RFP) to provide the town with information technology services. The successful firm will be charged sure providing information technology support services to meet current town needs and a re-design of the town website.

The IT RFP is the product of the Ad Hoc Information Technology Committee, which has been meeting for the past two months under the leadership of Chairman Ken Butterworth. Serving on the committee have been town staff members and community representatives with professional experience with IT management issues. The goal of the effort has been to craft an RFP that will yield proposals that will bring the town’s information technology function and town website up to the current state-of-the art to address both the town and community’s current needs.

The IT services proposals are due back to the first selectman’s office by Friday, Aug. 25.
