Cleary to Retire; Branford Will Choose New Tax Collector in November
In the November 7, 2017 Branford municipal elections, the office of Tax Collector will be won by a new candidate this year, after long-serving Branford Tax Collector Joanne Cleary, a Democrat, recently announced she would retire.
In both the 2013 and 2015 Branford municipal elections, Cleary was cross-endorsed by the town's Democratic and Republican parties for the role. Cleary first ran for Branford Tax Collector in 2005 and regained her seat in successive municipal elections through 2015. The Tax Collector serves a two-year elective term.
At their respective July 2017 caucuses, the town's Republican and Democratic parties selected their candidates for Tax Collector to appear on the November 2017 ballot. On July 18, Republicans endorsed as its Tax Collector candidate Sandy Kraus. On July 20, Democrats endorsed at its Tax Collector candidate Roberta Gill Brooks.
