One Fatality on the Water in Branford
Long Island Sound waters off Branford were the scene of a tragedy on Saturday, June 24, after the body of man was found off shore by a boater in the early afternoon.
U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound confirmed receiving a "good samaratian" call from a recreational boater who first discovered the body. The call came in sometime after 1 p.m., said Matthew Richards, Sector LI Sound Public Affairs Officer. The call reported an unresponsive male, floating face down next to a windsurfer in Long Island Sound near the vicinity of Branford. Branford Marine One was on the scene and started CPR, said Richard. The man's body was transferred to shore and brought to Yale-New Haven Hospital, he said.
Residents on the Linden Avenue waterfront near the Owenego Beach Club shared the man was brought to shore at the beach on Linden Avenue, where paramedics and fire first responders were waiting to assist.
As of Monday morning, June 26, the Connecticut State Medical Examiner's Office (CSMEO) told Zip06/The Sound the man's cause of death is pending further study. Further study protocol allows for up to eight weeks for a determination to be made, according to the CSMEO.
The Branford fatality was one of 26 calls received within a period 24 hours by Sector LI Sound, said Richards, including another fatality -- a report of an unidentified body found in Long Island Sound off of Clinton. The man was later identified on June 26 as a man missing out of New York, with accidental drowning determined as cause of death. See the story here
