Branford Schools Offer Free Summer Meals for Kids
Branford Public Schools (BPS) are preparing for another summer of free meals for kids and teens 18 and under. The program is supported by a USDA grant won by BPS, based in part on Branford's percentage of free and reduced lunch participants, which now totals approximately 27 percent of all public school students. The program offers breakfast and lunch served for free at Branford High School (BHS, 185 East Main St.), Tisko Elementary School (118 Damascus Road), and Sliney Elementary School (23 Eades St).
From Monday, June 19 through Friday, August 18, any Branford youth in need of nutritious, delicious hot and cold breakfast and lunch selections can participate by coming in to enjoy their weekday meal at the school buildings. Meals will be served Monday through Friday each week. Breakfast will be offered from 7:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
BPS notes dates and times are subject to change and that participants can check the district website or End Hunger CT website which will provide updated summer meals information.
This is the fourth year that BPS will be offering free breakfast and lunch to local kids every Monday through Friday, all summer long. The program began with service at BHS and Tisko and grew last year to include Sliney.
The meals help ensure kids 18 and under receive delicious, nutritious varieties of breakfast and lunch foods served up by BPS school dinning service provider Chartwells. Kids' parents and guardians are welcome, too. The program also actively provides free meals to kids arriving with Branford Parks and Recreation summer camps and Soundview YMCA summer camp programs.
The program is a combined effort of BPS, End Hunger CT, CT State Dept. of Education, Soundview YMCA, Chartwells, Branford Parks and Recreation Dept. and Community Dining Room.
