North Branford Flag Day Ceremony Returns June 14
On Wednesday, June 14, North Branford residents are encouraged to attend the second annual Flag Day Ceremony outside Town Hall. The moving event will culminate North Branford's annual "Honor Them With a Flag" program, a fundraising effort that fills the lawn of Town Hall with scores of small American flags, each representing those who serve or have served.
The number of flags that will be on display is building up right now, as "Honor Them With a Flag" orders continued to be accepted by Northford and North Branford Women's Clubs. Residents can purchase a 12" x 18" flag for $10, with 100 percent of proceeds to benefit veterans. Flags are purchased in memory of a current or past service person. The flag will be personalized with name and rank inscribed on a white ribbon. All flags will be displayed in front of North Branford Town Hall from Flag Day, June 14 through the Fourth of July.
The "Honor Them With a Flag" display will help set the stage for North Branford's National Flag Day ceremony, which will be held at the flagpole in front of Town Hall on on Wednesday, June 14 at 7 p.m.
Members of Northford and North Branford Women's Clubs, local veterans and a fitting group of local dignitaries and representatives of veterans' groups, emergency services, Boy Scouts and more are expected to participate. Residents are encouraged to attend.
At the May 16 Town Council meeting, Flag Day event organizer and North Branford Air Force veteran Chuck Larkins thanked the Town Council for continuing support of the Flag Day program, now entering its second year.
"We had a great event last year and we're looking forward to another one this year," said Larkins.
Last year, 125 small American flags surrounded the base of the main flag pole on the town hall campus, helping "Honor Them With a Flag" raise $1,250 ($10 per flag) in donations given to veterans' organizations. The women's clubs share the costs to pay for flag supplies so that 100 percent of the donations will go directly to veterans. The women's clubs receive a big assist in building the field of flags from local Boy Scout Troops as well as the Flag Day ceremony committee.
